Embankments.

The embankments connecting up the new gate are formed of field clay deposited in layers of six inches with an inward inelination to the centre of the bank of 1 in 12. Each layer was well kneaded and trodden by bullocks before the next layer was deposited. The embankment varies in height from 13 feet to 20 feet, the top width is 10 feet and average bottom width 82 feet. The outer slope towards the West River is 2 to 1 and the inner slope 2 to 1. Both slopes and top are turfed.

The laying-out, forming and finishing of the banks has been care- fully carried out and should demonstrate the advantage of constructing such work properly and to regular lines.

Construction.

The whole of the foregoing works, with the exception of the pen. stocks, were constructed by a Hongkong firm of Chinese Contractors, Messrs. Sang Lee & Co., and it is much to their credit that they completed them in the specified time of four months.

The contract time was fixed at four months in order to limit building operations to the period of one dry-season. The cost including the penstocks was $68,000.

The penstocks were made by the Taikoo Dockyard and Engineering Co. of Hongkong, Ltd.

Mr. John Duncan, A.M.I.C.E., First Grade Assistant Engineer, very ably assisted me in detailing and supervising the work.

The Honourable

The Colonial Secretary.

D. JAFFÉ, A.C.G.I., A.M.L.C.E., Special Engineer,

Public Works Department,

HONGKONG.
